About producer: The Calsac family had long sold their grapes to prestigious Champagne houses but in 2010, 26-year-old Etienne Calsac took over and began producing Champagne in-house from start to finish, combining family traditions with innovative techniques. Étienne's wines express the unique terroir, highlighting Chardonnay's elegance. Committed to sustainable practices, he implemented organic farming methods, achieving certification for all parcels by 2021. His experience at major Champagne houses informed his approach, blending rigorous quality control with personal touches inspired by fellow young vignerons. At Calsac, each parcel is vinified separately, with some wines barrel-aged.
About wine: Val l’Hermite is a Blanc de Noirs Champagne from a single parcel in the hamlet of Val l’Hermite, Bligny, in the Aube. The vineyard, with south-facing exposure and highly calcareous topsoil, produces Pinot Noir grapes for this cuvée. The 2020 vintage is vinified and spontaneously fermented in oak barrels, aged under cork for approximately 38 months on lees, and disgorged in February 2024 with no dosage. This wine represents a bold departure from Calsac's Chardonnay-focused offerings, featuring herbal, savory, and powerful notes, contrasting with the lighter style of his flagship cuvées like L’Échappée Belle and Les Rocheforts.
