Charles Dufour is a grower-Champagne producer based in Landreville, in the southern part of Champagne’s Côte des Bar. Born into a family of winegrowers, he represents a new generation of artisan producers shaping the contemporary identity of the region. After gaining experience outside Champagne, he took over the family vineyards and completed their conversion to certified organic viticulture in 2010. Today, Dufour is known for his precise, sincere, and terroir-driven style, becoming one of the most characterful voices of the Côte des Bar.
WHERE
The domaine cultivates around six hectares of organically farmed vines in Landreville and the surrounding area of the Côte des Bar — a sector defined by Kimmeridgian marl soils and a slightly warmer, more continental climate. These conditions give Pinot Noir (the estate’s backbone) depth, tension, and expressive aromatics. The vineyards are divided among family parcels, including those of Charles' mother, Françoise Martinot, whose plots contribute fruit for cuvées like Bistrøtage. All parcels are harvested and vinified separately to preserve identity and highlight the nuances of each site.
PHILOSOPHY
Charles Dufour works with a minimal-intervention mindset: indigenous yeasts, long élevage in oak barrels and foudres, restrained dosage, and a commitment to preserving the purity of each plot. Every wine is crafted to express its origin truthfully — detailed, transparent, and free of stylistic makeup. His approach balances intellectual depth with drinkability, resulting in Champagnes that are energetic, gastronomic, and unmistakably Côte des Bar in character. Flagship bottlings include Bulles de Comptoir and Bistrøtage, both reflecting his instinctive, terroir-first philosophy.
